Driver sentenced in fatal Montgomery County crash

A 20-year-old man pleaded guilty in mid June to charges resulting from a drunk driving accident. The incident led to the wrongful death of two of the driver's friends, both 19 years old, who were passengers in the car he was driving. The driver and four others were returning from a party when the car swerved off the road. The car was traveling approximately 100 miles per hour on a road in Montgomery County. The two deceased men and the driver graduated from the same high school in 2010.

The three surviving occupants, including the driver, suffered minor injuries and were transported to Abington Memorial Hospital after authorities arrived on the scene. The driver's blood-alcohol content (BAC) was reported at .117 percent, which is well above the state's legal limit of 0.08 percent. The group had been together at a party, where the underage driver presumably consumed the alcohol resulting in his elevated BAC.

Driver caught fleeing fatal Pennsylvania accident: wrongful death?

A man was arrested on Monday, May 21 in connection with a one-car accident in Pottstown just outside of Philadelphia. The 27-year-old male was identified as the driver of the vehicle that crashed killing two passengers and injuring another. He was arrested while allegedly trying to flee the area. According to investigators the one-car accident involved the accused man, a 28-year-old male passenger, a 15-year-old female passenger, a 16-year-old female passenger and another man who also fled the scene and was later identified as the driver's brother. The man arrested has been charged with a series of offenses relating to the crash, in addition to driving on a suspended license due to a previous DUI conviction.

While it is still early in the investigation of what may have been a preventable accident, the families of the deceased victims are suffering. They likely want answers as they try to come to grips with what occurred and whether the driver negligently caused the wrongful death of their loved ones. They may also face financial damages as they attempt to deal with the situation.

Drunk driving accidents common over Thanksgiving holiday

In an effort to save lives and reduce injuries, Northern Delaware County DUI Taskforce's "Operation Safe Holiday" will run from Thanksgiving through New Year's. They will be conducting a DUI checkpoint on Wednesday, November 23.  The night before Thanksgiving has become one of the biggest party nights of the year and the Thanksgiving holiday has a high number of drunk-driving accidents.

Accidents increase during holiday periods due to the volume of traffic on the roadway. PennDot reported that the weekend before and the weekend after the holiday often have as many crashes and fatalities, and sometimes more. In 2010, there were 1,389 crashes in Pennsylvania over Thanksgiving with 24 deaths.

Fatalities from car accidents involving impaired drivers also seem to increase significantly during the Christmas and New Year's Day holidays. According to the National Highway Traffic & Safety Administration, the number of people killed per day during these holiday periods is significantly higher than the fatalities per day for the rest of December.

Checkpoints are traffic stops where police officers assess drivers' level of alcohol impairment. These checkpoints can regularly reduce alcohol-related crashes by about 20%. The Delaware County taskforce began in 2009 and has made 64 DUI arrests since then. Even with more law enforcement out over the holiday periods, it is important for drivers to do their part to keep roadways safer this season.

Drunk-driving accident leads to train passenger injuries

Motor vehicle accidents in Philadelphia and across Pennsylvania frequently prove devastating to friends and family. This is especially true with regards to drunk driving accidents as they often cause serious personal injuries to those involved. Fortunately, one incident that involved a train and a possibly drunk driver did not lead to any life-threatening injuries, but it does serve as a reminder of what drinking and driving can lead to.

On October 13 at almost 4:30 in the morning, a Norristown High Speed Line commuter train struck an abandoned car. The incident took place in Haverford Township, Pennsylvania, and 24 passengers were injured in the collision. Fortunately, all injuries were minor.

Wrongful death suit possible for 2009 crash

Unfortunately, car and truck accidents are a frequent occurrence, and their results are often devastating for friends and family. The accident may be a result of inattention, drunk driving or tiredness, but personal injuries are too often the ultimate outcome. In some cases in Philadelphia and throughout Pennsylvania, the accident proves fatal. When this happens, a wrongful death suit may be appropriate.

In January 2009, a truck driver was traveling on the Schuylkill Expressway when he slammed into a 1997 Infiniti sedan. The impact of the collision killed the driver of the sedan. The Infiniti was pinned underneath the truck, which was said to be hauling 73,000 pounds of produce. The truck driver was already convicted of vehicular homicide and related offenses in June, 2009.
